What is Obstructive Sleep Apnea?
Obstructive
Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a sleep disorder caused by an
obstruction of the upper airway during sleep. Breathing
stops intermittently during the night because the air
cannot get through the obstruction. This causes frequent
interruptions in the normal sleep pattern and usually
results in excessive daytime sleepiness.
The most common causes of OSA are:
- Enlarged Tonsils
- An Elongated Uvula
- Obesity
- A Deviated Septum
- An Elongated Pallet
Common Symptoms of
OSA:
- Snoring
- Excessive Daytime Sleepiness
- Frequent Awakenings at Night
- Headaches
- Poor Memory
- Reduced Libido
- Depression
Merit Sleep Technologies guarantees state-of-the-art
respiratory medical equipment including CPAP, Bi-Level,
masks and additional necessary accessories.

How CPAP treats Sleep Apnea
Patients with moderate
to severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) are typically
treated with Continuous Positive Airway Pressure Therapy,
better known as CPAP. CPAP Therapy treats OSA by delivering
pressurized room air through a nasal mask. This keeps the
airway open and prevents it from collapsing during sleep.
Risks of Untreated OSA:
- High Blood Pressure
- Cardiac Conditions
- Automobile Accidents
- Impotence
- Stroke
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I determine if I need CPAP Therapy?
If you
have symptoms of OSA, your doctor may recommend you have a
sleep study. Your Physician will evaluate the data
collected from the sleep study and then determine if you
have OSA. If diagnosed, your Physician will prescribe a
treatment plan that may include CPAP Therapy. Before
starting CPAP Therapy, a second sleep study is conducted to
determine what pressure the CPAP should be set at.
How often should I wear my CPAP?
CPAPs need to be worn whenever you sleep.
When will I feel better?
Many patients experience
immediate results if they wear their CPAP consistently. You
will experience optimum benefits between one week and three
months of wearing your CPAP during sleep.
How long will I have to wear my CPAP?
Many factors
influence the length of treatment. Your Physician will
discuss the right treatment plan with you.
Where do I get a CPAP?
Your Physician can order
your CPAP from Merit Sleep Technologies. We will call you
to make arrangements for expert fitting of the mask and
training at the sleep center, your physicians office or
your home.
